<Women in ECE Gathering, Fall 2026>   The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at SUNY Korea hosted its Fall 2026 Women in ECE gathering on October 28, 2026.   During the event, students engaged in casual conversations about campus life, academic experiences, and career goals. The gathering also provided a welcoming space for students to openly discuss personal challenges and concerns they may not often have the opportunity to share.   Established in Fall 2025, Women in ECE aims at fostering an inclusive environment where female students feel welcomed, connected, and supported within the department. Through semester gatherings and guest talks featuring women in engineering, the initiative provides opportunities for students to build meaningful connections, exchange experiences, and gain valuable career insights and mentorship.

<Team Byeongjun showcasing Light-Coupled Astable Multivibrator>    The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at SUNY Korea hosted the Fall 2026 ECE Design Competition on October 14. Held once each semester, the competition provides students with an opportunity to showcase projects developed during the summer and winter breaks, applying engineering concepts learned in class to creative, hands-on work.   <2026 WeGO Global Youth Award Ceremony, COEX, Seoul>   Samteun Choi, a sophomore in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at SUNY Korea, received the WeGO Global Youth Award in the Advanced Technology category at the 2026 Global Youth Award Ceremony, held at COEX in Seoul on October 7.   Organized annually by the World Smart Sustainable Cities Organization (WeGO), the Global Youth Award recognizes young leaders who demonstrate outstanding leadership, academic excellence, and community engagement in areas such as smart cities, advanced technologies, sustainability, and entrepreneurship.   The ECE Department is proud to celebrate Samteun’s achievement as the first student from the department to receive this award. We congratulate him on this significant accomplishment and look forward to supporting his continued growth and success throughout his journey at SUNY Korea.   About Samteun Samteun is a sophomore majoring in Electrical Engineering at SUNY Korea, with interests in embedded systems and autonomous technologies. As president of the EVision student robotics club, he leads collaborative, hands-on robotics projects that encourage members of all skill levels to contribute. The team is currently developing a quadruped walking robot that integrates hardware design, 3D-printed structural components, and control software.   Applying the knowledge he has gained through his studies, Samteun has worked on a variety of engineering projects, including “3D LED Cube with Glove-Based Gesture Communication,” which earned first place at last year’s ECE Department Design Competition.   <Research Talk with Professor Jabbour>   The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at SUNY Korea hosted a Research Talk titled “Engineering Tomorrow: From Ultrathin Silicon to Flexible Electronics and Smart Textiles” with Professor Ghassan Jabbour on October 1, 2026.     The seminar explored innovative approaches to developing new technologies while using fewer resources and making manufacturing more affordable. Professor Jabbour shared his research connecting advanced materials, manufacturing, and device design, covering topics such as ultrathin silicon, nanomaterials, quantum dots, printed electronics, photonic devices, and micro-/nanoscale 3D printing. Students had the opportunity to learn how interdisciplinary research across electrical, mechanical, materials, and chemical engineering can lead to new possibilities in technology development.   The ECE Department thanks Professor Jabbour for sharing his research and experiences with our students and for offering valuable insights into emerging technologies and interdisciplinary engineering research.   About Professor Ghassan Jabbour       Professor Ghassan Jabbour is a Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Ottawa and holds the Canada Research Chair Tier 1 in Advanced Materials and Devices. He also serves as Director of the Center for Hybrid Interfaces & Intelligent Thin Films (HIIT) and the Advanced Materials and Devices Laboratories at the University of Ottawa. With over 20 years of experience in photonics, flexible electronics, advanced manufacturing, quantum materials, printed electronics, and semiconductor and photonic devices, he has led interdisciplinary research initiatives across multiple fields of engineering.    Professor Jabbour has delivered more than 655 invited talks, plenary sessions, seminars, workshops, and public talks, and has contributed as a Chair, Co-Chair, or Committee Member to more than 350 conferences. His work has also included establishing and leading interdisciplinary engineering research centers, as well as mentoring faculty, researchers, and students.

<New Student Gathering, ECE Department>    The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at SUNY Korea welcomed its incoming students for Fall 2026 at a New Student Gathering held on August 26.   The event began with welcoming remarks from Professor Seung Ho Hwang, Chair of the ECE Department, followed by an introduction to the ECE faculty and an overview of the department and its academic programs.   Students were introduced to the field of Electrical and Computer Engineering and learned more about the courses, skills, and career pathways they can explore throughout their time at SUNY Korea. The gathering also provided an opportunity for students to connect with the faculty members and colleagues as they begin their university journey.   The ECE Department warmly welcomes our 12 incoming students and looks forward to supporting them throughout their academic journey at SUNY Korea.

<Chair / Professor Seung Ho Hwang>   The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at SUNY Korea is pleased to welcome Professor Seung Ho Hwang as the new Chair of the ECE Department.   Professor Hwang received his B.S. degree from Seoul National University, his M.S. degree from KAIST, and his Ph.D. degree from the University of California, Berkeley, all in Electrical Engineering. Before joining SUNY Korea, he served as a faculty member at KAIST for about ten years. He then spent another decade in Silicon Valley, where he developed key patents that helped establish the HDMI standard. He later served as Executive Vice President of Samsung Electronics' System LSI Division and Hyundai Motor Company, where he contributed to connected car and vehicle intelligence technologies.   Professor Hwang brings extensive academic and industry experience to the department. His research interests include electronic and electrical systems design and implementation. The department warmly welcomes Professor Hwang and looks forward to continued growth and new achievements under his leadership.

<Chair Hong and President Lee at the Farewell Ceremony>   The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at SUNY Korea expresses its sincere appreciation to Professor Sangjin Hong, founding chair of the ECE Department, for his many contributions to the department since its establishment in Fall 2022.   Under Professor Hong's guidance, the department established its instructional laboratories, developed course offerings and course sequences tailored to SUNY Korea ECE students, and launched the EVision student club and the Women in ECE initiative. Through his commitment to education and student mentoring, he created a supportive community where students could grow both academically and professionally. These efforts laid a strong foundation for the department's academic programs and student activities.   The department thanks Professor Hong for his vision, dedication, and lasting contributions. His work has shaped the department and will continue to support its students and faculty for years to come. We wish him continued success and happiness in the future.
